Capped Bust half dollar Guys&Gals,

I'm still here and kicking. Please help me out and tell me what you think about this 1827 CBH Dollar. I know the pictures are kinda bad, but it's still intriguing...

Thanks

Hmmm. Curled-base 2, check. Obverse 29, check. Reverse....wait. The I in PLURIBUS isn't in the right place. That's the first place I look to narrow an attribution. If I read the pics right, it's way too far to the right to be O-147. Obverse looks correct though. Even with the obverse brushed, I'd have paid that money for it just to know.

You think it's a new variety? Perhaps the 2 is tooled.

I can't get to mine for definite reference, but I would have to say that is not a curl base '2' as I remember the base tapering to a point whereas a close view of that one indicates a standard '2'.

You're right as rain, HABIB, but it didn't seem quite right for a straight-base either, which is why I'm thinking it might have been tooled. The curl should be much more pronounced, but the square-bases pretty much come to a horizontal point on the left end, and I don't see that here.

Then again, Ben may be talking about something else entirely.

Hopefully the coin will be here by the weekend. I've carefully compared it to the other (curl base two's) which I'm still leaning toward. I'm thinking (O-147) until the coin arrives then one can determine better if the 2 was squashed or messed with. When comparing it to other CBHs online and in hand I really can't see any tooling or metallic eye alterations to be quite honest and I have a few. The tone is very distinctive in the brow/cheek/eye area but we're talking about busties and it can be all over the place.

The coin was only on the ebay market (store section) for less than two weeks. The first offer didn't attract any buyers and I got it on the 2nd. If it is a Sq Base two then perhaps it will be a variety I need anyway. :)

Take Care

If it's a square base I'm thinking O-115.

Well, as the old saying goes, "Nothing Ventured, Nothing Gained..." One thing for sure is it isn't a (CURL BASE) 2. Now, I'm thinking... LOL :D

Take Care
