Hello guys,

i am not very experienced with californian fractional gold pieces and this is why I send them all to NGC.

Apparently they were not able to identify this specimen:

Unusual-1880-Dated-California-Fractional-Gold-1/4-Dollar.-A-Pattern?
Unusual-1880-Dated-California-Fractional-Gold-1/4-Dollar.-A-Pattern?
Unusual-1880-Dated-California-Fractional-Gold-1/4-Dollar.-A-Pattern?

Diameter: 10mm
Weight: 0.11gm

Could this be somekind of a pattern?

Any help would be appreciated!

...by the way, happy 4th of July to all Americans!

It could be a token. Possibly made locally (in California) for change or ease of fitting into a 'money belt'.

The effigy is lacking in features, thus it could also be a fake or a bad copy.

The government mint would not put 'CAL~GOLD' on a coin, thus the question of 'who made it'? If it was official it would have 'DOLLAR' 'DOL' or 'D' along with the 1/4. I ended up at Mike Locke's Calgold page without finding anything like yours.

There is a list of makers to be found at the Locke site, those that made fractional tokens before 1883 and those that made them after 1883. The U.S. government started to rigorously enforce counterfeiter laws in 1883.

Thus a token or charm of some sort, gold or not.

Seems to me be be an example of a rather large genre of these:
a jeweler's copy. Most of them are in good gold.

Little numismatic value unfortunately, but probably still collectible, if only to have practical knowledge in how to identify them.

If this were a gold California quarter I would expect it to weigh about .25-.30 grams. At .11 grams it's more likely gold plated brass. I don't think it's a pattern.

Thanks guys, it is nice to hear so many different opinions, I am also not sure what this is.

A few things are remarkable though, the style of the indian resembles very much the original issues, the way how the coin was struck also, the surfaces appear very similar to the originals.

What is here different from the regular issues is the unusually thin planchet.

If a forger makes a forgery, he would at least use a thicker planchet, otherwise the passing of such a piece would be hard. The material of which it is made is possibly low grade gold or a well gold plated non-precious metal.

I think, that the piece is therefore contemporary and probably made by the same people who did the regular gold pieces. I can not call it a pattern as it is not listed anywhere in that weight (at least not in the standard catalogue I have), but still this is something quite unusual and not just a common copy.

Unusual-1880-Dated-California-Fractional-Gold-1/4-Dollar.-A-Pattern?

I would wonder if this piece is unique (even forgeries are mostly not unique), therefore there should be somebody who has seen it before.

In the Red Book 63rd Edition 2010 page 379 under the title, "CALIFORNIA SMALL DENOMINATION GOLD.' There is a picture of your coin with a different reverse.

This coin is definitely not a fake or forgery:
Style sufficiently different enough for no intention to deceive.
Die quality certainly not high enough to be trial (pattern) from a mint.

That is why it is a jeweler's copy.

Keep it in your collection anyway.
