Have always liked Morgan's and am getting back into collecting them. I used to only buy certified, typically PCGS and a few NGC as I thought that would keep a novice from being ripped off too easily but lately I have bought a few uncertified as well, staying at the lower $$$ amounts ($25 or less).

Except for the obvious I don't know how to tell they are real. Weigh them, hit them with a magnet, compare them to photo's and certified coins in my collection, and (except for that one buy the other night) try to stay with what looks like legitimate sellers with good feed back and a history of selling coins.

And assume anything to good to be true, is

Anything else I should know?

How confident are you that you know what a Morgan SHOULD look like at any grade level? That is the first step in Counterfeit Detection - the gut feeling.

Not as confident as I would like to be. Honestly slabbed graded coins makes a person lazy as someone else has done the homework. And most of what I owned were MS62 to 65 so I haven't seen many AU or below.

I mean I see 1893-S on ebay for 200 not certified and just assume it is a fake but pictures are the easiest thing to fake and all I see on ebay are pictures. Are there a lot of fakes in common date coins that sell for $25 or less?

But I also know things happen I used to collect knives and saw a nice Scagel starting at $10. I sent her a note and told her to get it appraised a bunch of other people were offering her $150-250 to end it early. I think it went for $10,000. I myself got a nice late 1800's Sheffield Manson dirk someone had listed as a Masonic dagger for $50 that I traded for a $400 dagger I wanted. But coins I don't know as well

Also with antique knives I had an expert I could show the auction to and for $5 get an experts opinion. Now $5 for a $25 coin is different than $5 for a $500 knife but after a few years I could tell almost all the fkes a mile away

Most Morgan counterfeits that you are going to buy for under $25 are not going to be high grade counterfeits and you should be able to tell from appearance, weight and magnet test. On appearance you need to know what a Chinese fake looks like. You should focus on your grading skills and how to tell from photo if the coin has been cleaned.

You are correct as that $200 93s or 89cc in AU condition with multiple coins for sale is going to be Counterfeit. If you ever have any question about a coins authenticity, it is best to post the coin on the board and have the CCF members check it out.

OK another question. It seems with fee's and stuff ebay would not be the best place to sell coins but every online seller I have checked for PCGS slabbed morgans seems to want more than I pay on ebay? Why? Are websites that expensive?
