I love coins with toning on them. But, I'm finding coins that I have a hard time figuring out what the discoloration may be from. Natural toning, or dirt... I'd like to see numerous examples of multiple types of legitimate toning coins. Anyone who can post a pic, that would be great. Plus, check out this quarter and tell me what you think. Toning or dirt?

And one more question: is toning considered a + error when grading or a - damage/corrosion/cleaning issue

Your coin looks like it has something on it and possibly no dirt. I doubt it's dirt but possibly something like stuff from tape.
As to your question. One of the really difficult situations. So many have figured out ways to tone a coin artificially and make it look as good as if real. Becoming something for some people to do. I'm sure you'll get lots of replies as to how to tell but in many instances, just a good guess.

Agree, well said. Experience is the best guide, but even that isn't always reliable.

Looks like your coin is stained probably by a slightly acidic liquid. If you're interested in learning about the science of toning read this link thoroughly...

Yes ,your coin is not toned nor dirty . Looks like just a stain . Like the other members said , you'll know the difference in time by experience .

Huh, that kinds looks like a missing clad layer error that had toned a little. Wait for others responses though as I'm not an expert on them. That does seem like a strong strike for a missing clad layer though and I think I see specs of silver color. So maybe ED?

This CCF thread has many images of toned coins and is worth looking at even just to drool over some of the coins in there
