Hello, I would like some input about this penny I found when I reciently purchased a lot of loose pennies. I think it's a 1993. My question is this penny is bigger than any other penny by a lot. Other pennys sit well inside the upset rim/edge. There also is a groove inside where the reeded edge would be on like a quarter for say. Is this just zinc "gassing off"? Thank you.

Thanks for the weighing; I was surprised by the groove and curious about metal loss from the damage. It's difficult to know exactly what happened, but I have a story: The cent was horribly abused, beat and somewhat flattened with a hammer. The thin copper plating surrounding the zinc core was heavily damaged. The cent was then subjected to an acidic environment, which ate into the exposed zinc. The grove around the edge formed, and the copper plating eventually was lifted off. If the original weight was 2.50g it lost 0.17g in the process. The loss of copper plating amounted to 0.04g, and the rest (0.13g) was the loss of zinc.
