I just found this coin at an antique store in their "buttons and medals" dish. Based on very cursory research, it seems like a hammered coin from the princely states, but I can't find anything close to a match in terms of design. It's about 21mm across and very thick (about the equivalent of three US nickels). It almost seems brass, but that doesn't seem to match that coin type which would likely be more copper or silver - could just need some cleaning.

Am I on the right track?

Thanks in advance...

Thank you, Bob! One side of the Muhammad Akbar Copper Dam Dogaon is virtual identical with a slight shift on the hammer strike. The other side has the same shifted middle though the top and bottom are different. Am guessing that means it was that Shah, but not the same year?

Petrus - I DID clean it. I know I shouldn't have, but it was so covered in sediment etc I could not tell much about it except for its size and weight. I'm not sure I could have identified it without some cleaning.

A ~475 year-old coin. Not a bad find for $3US. :)
