I want to get the family together for a coin search this weekend.

Do I just go down to my local Credit Union or Bank (which would be best?) and buy a bag of pennies. nickels, dimes, quarters and put a cloth on the dining room table and start looking at them?

I have a 10x BelSOMO loupe on it's way as well as the following books...

The Official American Numismati Association Grading Standards For United States coins
The Expert's Guide to Collecting & Investing in Rare Coins: Secrets Of Success
2008 Guide Book of US coins RedBook

Should I get magnifiers for everyone? I could go pick up some cheap ones at Walgreens or something.

I will start off with $100 purchase. What would you recommend?

Thanks!

Well I know I get a bag on pennies for $50 and Boxes are $25 Nickels are $200 a bag at my bank. It boils down to a matter of choice. More to search through with smaller change IMO.

I asked about bags of coins at a bank a few days ago and the tellers looked at me like I had three heads.

What's the process for buying bags of coins.

I "think" I gleaned, from the tellers, that I "order" a bag. They certainly dont keep bags on hand and one teller said there's no way for them to sell them over the counter without ordering them because they dont know the value of "bags of coins" that are simply sitting in the vault.

Well when I get a Bag it's a large plastic bag that is sealed. It's not the cloth bank bags. I will say that rolls seem easier to deal with for me.

I have no problem getting bags of pennies($50 bags) from our local banks (we have 2 banks in town for a population of 1500). The pennies (cents) come in a canvas bag and sure are heavy--I take my grandson's stroller along to put them in--so much easier on the back. My hubby and I dump them out a little at a time on our bar and then go to town (so to speak)--be sure to have good lighting, too! You will have so much fun, but be sure to take breaks and praise the kids when they find a cent that goes in your albums--you do have albums, right? Once they see that they have filled a hole in the coin albums they will squeal with delight!

Good Luck! Have fun and remember that's what it is all about!

For one thing you if you have a flea market in the are, try them for an assortment of magnifing glasses. By me they one seller has an entire table of them. Some with stands, with lights, a two lens one for your head and lots, lots more. I like the ones on a head band. Great for removing splinters in my hands.
If at all possible aquire coins by the bags. Usually those have just come in and not run through the rolling machines. If you buy any rolls of coins they have been run through a rolling machine and may have additional scratches, marks, etc.
If you think a bank person will give you a hard time about buying bags, tell them it's for a joke. You give large amounts of pennies for wedding gifts as a joke. Many banks think it's funny and will go along with you. Of course it you do this frequently, they'll start to realize you just couldn't get invited to that many weddings.
The main thing with bags of coins is they are in a vault, not at the teller's window. This means they would ether have to go to the vault to get them or find someone to do this. Make sure you oly make such requests when the bank is extreamely slow or they will just say we don't have any. You would be holding up many customers with real buisness.
