hmmm iv noticed and its kinda making me wonder -- has anybody noticed when the original time for a bidding that ends -- gets an extra 5 or so minutes? And when this happens suddenly bidding becomes rampant. Is any body paying attention to this as I've never seen this before. Or ebay has a extra time option?
Fill me in about your thoughts about this

There are many last-minute bid companies that will bid for you electronically as the clock ticks down (for a fee, of course}. Sometimes these competing bids get stacked at the end and have to be worked off against each other sequentially until the winner is determined, which may appear to lengthen the auction. This may help explain your question.

There are auction companies which extend the auction closing after each bid by a small amount of time. Check their terms & conditions.

Not sure I've noticed a 5 min increase, but I have noticed that if the time on my computer is off, the auction will end either faster or slower than I expected it to. So make sure the time on your computer is accurate.

Next time pay attention--till timer ends. Its exactly my point why I posted this topic ---becouse I just recently bid and watched carfully with my Androyd phone and reg computer land line Optimum -and it happend twice within this week. I only bid on two items-so.I thought when timer ends --then bidding STOPS.Its that simple

if you have the auction on your screen the clock actually stops counting down at a few minutes.it still counts down but if you are bidding you can't see how much time is left, I have seen this many times, but if you have the auction open in 2 windows, you can see that it still counts down accurately, but in the window you are bidding in it will freeze, I think it is too encourage people to keep bidding, because they don't know how much time is actually left.
