I own this 1898-S Barber half dollar. It has great luster and light gold toning. The toning is rather hazy when you view it directly on, but when you tip it in the light the luster and gold toning really come alive. There are no obvious cleaning marks on it, but I can't be sure that it hasn't been dipped or had something done to it. The photo doesn't capture the gold toning or luster as well as they show up "in hand". What do people think? Thanks for your opinions. Paul Bulgerin

My gut says fake because of the grainy texture and the lack of relief. Genuine coin: Fake coin from no-no site. Note the thickness of the 1.

I see what you mean about the haze . but in my opinion ,I don't see any indications of a cleaning . perhaps over dipped too many times .

TypeCoin971793,
Unfortunately, I think you may be right. The weight is just over 11 grams and the real thing should be 12.5.
The last 8 in the date is in a different position than that on the fake, but the weight is off.

That coin is not genuine. Not even close.

Hopefully you didn't get too burned on it. I too saw something off at first glance.

Just the "look" alone would have bothered me, and I've never really owned many Barber coins.

Just my 2 cents, but I've actually once unfortunately purchased a counterfeit Barber quarter, and it's oftentimes easier to distinguish inconsistencies when looking at a picture, especially when you can compare the coin side by side to a genuine example, than in real life, at a coin show or coin store under dim lighting. Happens to the best of us Paul Bulgerin. No one is immune from it, especially nowadays with how good the counterfeiters are getting.

I emailed the seller and he said he is willing to work with me on this. That's good to hear.

Looks fake; unless you know what to look for, you're better off buying a certified coin.

I received my refund for the coin today. I sent the seller the links to this thread and he has read what everyone has said about this fake.
