So this is a contemporary counterfeit. If I am correct that means this is not a numismatic forgery but rather a bill meant to deceive back in it's day. If I made a fake loonie to spend in 100 years you would have a "contemporary counterfeit".

I know these are collected to show how bills have been faked but what exactly makes this fake valuable? I could never own a real one so I am looking at this with some questions.

There is no write up on how this was faked or if it was spent. I am interested in it as a Maritime bank collector but it seems off to buy a fake for that price.

What does the community think, would this be an interesting addition to help me tell the story of the Maritime bank of should I spend the money some other way?

One thing that makes this particular note unique apart from the others in this auction/collection is, especially when you see it in person, the fake is almost cartoon-like. It's comical to imagine this would have been taken somewhere with the expectation that it would be accepted as legitimate. It would certainly be awesome to know its history.

If it had a good story I would throw in the minimum bid. Queen Victoria looks way off.

"Hand executed" would seem to indicate it was entirely sketched by hand. Yes, if the history behind it has been lost that's really unfortunate, likely it served as a joke played on a person or a business back in the day.

However at the liberty of the buyer..... I've known more than one Maritimer who can string a really good yarn, so much so that I'm not convinced it's always 100% true even though it's incredibly and indisputably entertaining.

If I collected bank notes, I would consider bidding on it as a work of art alone.

I think a counterfeit collector is buying up all the lots. I just checked and my bid of $800 did not stick. To who ever gets it I hope it is the showpiece in your collection!
