I am in the final stages of completing my proof modern commemorative set. What I have noticed in my five years collecting is that prices, by and large, have seemed to fall. Maybe it has to do with silvers nose dive in spot in that time. But I have been amazed that most of my recent buys this year have been under $30 in OGP. My question is why? Is there just not a large collector market? I could understand those prices for pieces like the 1986 Liberty, 1987 constitution, the high montage pieces but when I can buy a Black Patriots PF for $42, several with mintages under 100,000 that sell for several dollars under $30 with free shipping, well, it just seems low. Is this a dip is the hobby, low point in the cycle or something else? I'm not complaining as I am finally able to resume my coin hobby just as the prices seem to be bottoming out. Hope it holds as I need to finish the MS set next. Thanks for listening!

Congrats on your progress toward completing your modern US commemorative set in proof! They make a wonderful collection.
As you've noticed, the prices for modern US commemorative coins have definitely declined over the past five years, with many of the proof versions being especially hard hit.
It is truly a matter of supply and demand. While there is a fairly large collector base for the modern coins, especially the silver and clad issues, there are generally more coins available in the marketplace than there are collectors. This has caused the market price for many of the coins to trend toward their bullion value. Future increases in value for many of the issues will be based on a rise in precious metal prices.
As I and others here on CCF have said, modern US commemorative coins should not be considered as investment instruments with the potential for strong future value growth - they should be collected because you enjoy the US history they represent and because you find them attractive/appealing as small works of art.
The MS versions of the series have also seen recent price declines, but several of them still command a noticeable premium over issue price. Keep us apprised of your progress on your UNC set!

They may have fallen on raw coins but not so much on Slabbed MS 69/70 PCGS or NGC coins!

I too have noticed the value of commemorative dollars dropping.
This past year I started working on getting the Proofs. So I am OK with the price drops.
I even stopped buying some of the new releases from the mint, hoping to pick them up in the future when they drop in price.

The trouble is there are WAY too many modern commemative coins, the Congress keeps adding more every year. I kept up with them until a couple of years ago. There are just too many of them, and for most, the lowering of interest and high cost just leave you saying "enough!"
The old commemoratives have been in the doldrums for several years also for some of the reasons.

I don't collect any of my coins for investment purposes. I buy for the look, the history and some just because I need it to complete my set. I think there are some real beauties in modern commemoratives. History will eventually see this as it has with the classics. We all know a lot of the most loved classics were not popular in their day. Keep the faith my fellow brothers and sisters!
