I`m thinking it could be either surface corroded or something like that or a pretty good casting. Hasn`t been tested for silver content either. Maybe that`s next.

It`s not, I bought it off ebay quite a while ago & never sent it in to be graded or verified.

Was wondering if by any chance it could have been a counterfeit or possibly a bad strike. My next step was going to the jewelers to have him acid test it but not sure I want to do that to the coin... It non-magnetic but a very dull grey & has a strange surface texture. I figured if these have been seen around before and I bought one, maybe someone here knows something more about them. Thought about posting in Variety forum but thought I`d come here first.

TaeKenDo, post your coin in the Canadian circulation coin forum. No one looks here, this section is for reporting counterfeits listed on ebay.

Looks like some of the counterfeit ones I have seen... they have a "cast" look to them as well...

At first look I would have said environmental corrosion then cleaning leaving that surface finish... But the texture is very uniform on both sides so I think cast counterfeit too

In unworn condition, a SD should weight 23.33 grams. Yours weighs 25 grams? It's seems extremely well detailed for a counterfeit. Is it possible it's a legitimate coin that's been coated with an unknown substance giving it the rough texture and added weight?

If you want to wait until after my field season, I will happily test it with my XRF for you...

SPP I hope TaeKenDo takes you up on your offer...this is an interesting one. If I had to guess I'd place it on the 1958 was washed in a light mix of cement! But why anyone would do that, I have absolutely no idea..

The sharpness of the rim, does not match the lack of detail in the devices... that is another reason why I suspect this is a cast counterfeit...

Could it have been lightly sandblasted?
