Hi, I'm new to this forum, so I apologize if this is the wrong place to ask this. My question is about a description of a coin I saw on ebay. I'm not really a collector (yet!) but I'm interested in starting. I have about 10 wheat pennies from 1937-48, and had a 1908 but seem to have lost it in the move. But regarding the coin I saw, it was a 1899 Indian Head penny and the description was as follows: 1899 1C BN Indian cent (1617).

Can someone explain to me what that means? It's okay to treat me like I'm 5 while doing so. I'm a newbie, haha. Thank you in advance!

Not exactly sure of your question, but BN commonly designates a "brown" coloration on a high-grade copper coin.

Post the link to your ebay auction.

I was just curious about what the letters and numbers meant in that description, but here is a link to the expired auction.

The BN refers to the color of uncirculated copper coins(RD=Red, RB=Red-Brown, BN=Brown) but it is a superfluous descriptor for a circulated copper coin since all circulated copper is brown. (1617) is just the seller's inventory number, it has nothing to do with the coin itself.

I see. What should I look for as a beginner? Some quick tips on say, grading, or appearance?

Maverick - as a member, you can use the "search" feature on this forum to go back and read countless past discussions on any subject you like! Play around with it for awhile - you will learn much more from past threads than you will reading day-to-day chatter.

to CCF!

Download the PCGS Photograde application or look at their on-line site - you will see great photos of the various grades of coins.
