Are there some series you only like in a certain grade and not in others? For me, a Bust Dollar should be VF-30. An AU or better just looks odd to me. Morgans should be MS-64. Why? I don't know. Seated halves should be in XF. Higher or lower just seems odd to me. Why? Still don't know.

I don't know either! The higher the grade the better for me.

I think anything that is a technical AU-58 looks great to me, especially the earlier issues. Though, I can see where you are coming from with the bust dollars in the VF category.

I think on all coins that I collect , I would rather have them in AU-58 Then MS-60 or 61 . there's something about those beginning MS grades that turn me off .

I don't particularly like Barber coinage. Don't like the design. That is, until it gets "seasoned" a bit. For some reason, I love it in the F-VF range, especially when if it has that "circ-cam" look. I love to go through dealers' junk bins of Barber quarters and halves, not to cherrypick, but just to find pretty ones. Here's an example (not from the junk bin) graded F-12:

Count me as a sucker for AU58 coins in pretty much any series.

If you read Robert Shippee's book pleasure & profit 100 lessons for building a collection. He thinks AU 58 is the sweet spot for most coins. The one where if you are careful it has the most potential to for gain. His pursuit of top pops or close to it resulted in little gain or losses. It's a great little book, with a very honest assessment of his coin collecting.

Difficult for me to decide on a best grade. For example I'm trying to put together an all FSB Mercury dime Album. It's odd that in some instances such a coin could be a AU grade and still have FSB. Then too many of the MS grades do not have all FABs. Best example is the 1945 Mercury dime where you could find one in MS-67 or -68 and yet no FSB. With this set, the best grade is not always what I want.

Walkers and St. Gaudens in top MS grades only for me! The neo classic designs of these compete with some of the best of ancient medallic art.

I like Walkers and Saints in MS-65 and better.
I have Shippee's book. The problem with AU-58 across the board is that some series are too expensive to collect in that grade. AU-58 Draped Bust dimes, quarters, halves, dollars in AU-58 anyone?

Higher grades work for me all the time. The trouble is I don't like paying for them. As for the VF-30 on Bust Dollars, that is lowest grade that I would consider, and I'd only consider that if I were a die variety collector. Those coins did not circulate that much. Therefore most of them are going to have a sharpness grade of VF-30 or more. Do you think that this AU-58 is odd looking? As for Morgan dollars, MS-64 is good grade from me because I don't scratched up coins, especially if they have P-L surfaces. Seated half dollars? The higher the grade the better. Here's an MS-64, CAC. It works for me.
