These 2 coins came from a neighbour who got them in his change on holiday.

The field around the edge on the 1994 is smooth and flat but the same field on the 1995 has depressions on all 4 sides both obverse and reverse.

The vertical of the 'L' in the ALS initials on the reverse of the 1995 is completely missing.

Is this a greasy die, or just a poorly worn die or something else ?

It might be a counterfeit- they are pretty well documented.
Try picking it up with a weak magnet. The authentic coin has enough nickel around a copper core to grab the magnet. The counterfeits have maybe one-tenth or so less nickel so it tends to not be picked up or falls off readily.

I've tried with both a weak and a strong magnet. The degree of attraction seems to be the same.

Where are the counterfeits documented, please ?

South African Mint press release dated 2003.
I've seen more coins with very poor A then some with a poor S, but the L seems to be the better letter.
If genuine then grease or dirt is a good choice.
