It might be a counterfeit- they are pretty well documented. Try picking it up with a weak magnet. The authentic coin has enough nickel around a copper core to grab the magnet. The counterfeits have maybe one-tenth or so less nickel so it tends to not be picked up or falls off readily.
South African Mint press release dated 2003. I've seen more coins with very poor A then some with a poor S, but the L seems to be the better letter. If genuine then grease or dirt is a good choice.
