I heard that keeping coins in a wooden case will damage them over a period of time. Is this true? Is the box that my coins are in now a threat to them?

I don't know. It's not only the box but other stuff in the box as well that could harm your unprotected coins. The container could "out gas" as well as other items in the box. John1

Oh for Pete's sake NO, the box will not harm your coins! But I don't think the Altoids are helping any.

You won't live long enough for the stain in the wood of the box to damage your coins, especially if you open it periodically, releasing any traces of fumes.
Those 2x2 flips will do more harm, they aren't for permanent storage, but they do keep them away from the liner material, which may or may not be glued down, or of suspect dye. Just put the coins in an archival storage capsule or slab if they have any value.
You should put those bills in mylar sleeves unless it's spending money.

Good advice. The cinnamon Altoids are by far the best.

I just keep random foreign coins in the Altoids container.

Most probably. The thin mylar is scant protection against those coins banging together. If the box is too small to accomodate archival quality album pages, still buy them; just cut them to size to fit in the box. There ARE simple and practical solutions to problems such as this one, so go ahead, and use the box! Smaller module 6 or 12 pocket albums for 2x2 Mylar/cardboard flips are also available, that will accomodate cut down album pages. I use all three module size albums for various storage purposes: the 6 pocket albums are the only ones small enough for my rather small safe; that's where my most valuable coins are kept.

How long have you used it and have you noticed any changes to the coins in that time?
I think you will be fine as long as you have the coins in holders. More layers are better, so putting those 2x2s in archival pages should help.

I don't think that the box will harm the coins unless you are going to leave it unopened for the next 20-30 years. There is just something about Wood and coins together that just appeals to me and that is a rather nice box It's a lot more athletically pleasing than my storage system

I don't mean to hijack the thread, but can someone verify or explain paxbrit's statement that 2x2's can do harm to coins long term? I was under the impression that 2x2's were completely safe long term. Thanks

Guess I should explain, there are archival non-pvc coin flips and there are pvc coin flips. Unless you've personally bought the archival-grade flip, it's best to remove your coins from the flip it came in and re-house it, at the very least. I prefer putting mine into slabs and avoiding the treated paper and the oxidizing staples, as well, but that's just me.

trout1105, You earned a time out. You can start collecting coins again in four years. Five, if any of that is currency.
