TobyJ Pillar of the Community United Kingdom 1273 Posts	Posted 07/15/2016 11:17 am Hi all. I've been reading all these topics, trying to get better at taking photos of coins. I tried with my Fujifilm 12 megapixel camera but I just wasn't getting the right focus. I actually starting taking some with my Samsung Galaxy S6 phone camera! Incredible that this camera is better than my SLR. I'm still going to save up for a really decent DSLR with macro lens, but in the mean time...I thought I'd show these photos I took with the phone camera. I made a lightbox out of a cardboard box, cut holes in the sides and top and stapled over an old white bedsheet. So the box cost me nothing. Cut a little bottle cap so that coins could sit at a slight angle. Here are the photos of the Justin II and Sophia, Roman Follis AD 570/71, I believe it is that age anyway. Any tips for a better picture would be greatly appreciated :) I have two light boxes shining in from the sides, and I keep the homemade box in a conservatory which is full of natural day light. austrokiwi Pillar of the Community 2087 Posts	Posted 07/15/2016 12:29 pm Impressive for a cell phone camera( or any camera for that matter). Small comment: the stand you used for holding the coin up vertically is distracting. Is it possible to just lie the coin down and photograph it from above? It is Byzantine yes, I've just been dealing with Roman coins all day so I put that because Roman coins are on my brain. I tried photographing it from above but it wasn't nearly as clear because of the shakiness of the phone, and it didn't catch the light as well as horizontal photography. With this I could keep the camera flat to the base of the box. I could try photographing it from above, if I had something to hold the phone steady, and that way there wouldn't be the ugly plastic stand. Report this Post to the Staff
rmpsrpms Pillar of the Community United States 4038 Posts	Posted 07/16/2016 8:37 pm I am always impressed with nice pics taken in natural daylight. It work especially well for circulated coins, and of course ancients as you are showing. With some judicious cropping you could remove the stand and end up with a very nice shot with no distractions.
