Here is where I take all my coin photos. It is a 1960's TESTRITE CS-3 COPY STAND AND No. 23 COPY LIGHTS with an additional up to 8 5500K CFA lights. I modified the stand with a pan/tilt/angle head. I have a Fuji Finepix point and shoot (which eventually I will upgrade to a DSLR) When I have it dialed in it takes excellent pictures but I can't wait to get a better camera.

cool steampunk stand. I like the old school red c-clamps also. Nice shot but Ray will get you for not rotating your coin to vertical.

Thank you Wizzy1. Composition is the first priority!

SV...bring your lights up to a higher angle and it'll improve your shots. Right now the edges of all devices are highlighted, while the surfaces are dark. Should be other way around and will be if your lights are at higher angle.

Thank you Wizzy1 & rmpsrpms I will give that a try. I am in the research mode for what camera I would like to purchase. I am considering a Panasonic LUMIX DMC-GF3K 12.1 MP Digital Camera with a Panasonic Leica DG Macro-Elmarit 45MM F/2.8 ASPH. MEGA O.I.S. Lens. I could possibly pick them up used for under $600.00 but like I said I am still researching...when I research it may take months for me to make a decision...lol

Thank you for the welcome mdpmedia I am fairly new to coin collecting so hopefully I will learn some new things relating to the hobby on here. I am fairly new to stamp collecting also and have been doing that quite heavily for the last couple years. I guess this is just a natural progression...lol

I highly recommend that you change your background to a dark, non-reflective medium.
You want the light the camera collects to be mostly from the coin.
This is particularly important when you deal with copper coins.
The light background tends to make your coins look washed out.

kanga I would do that....but I sell on Amazon and Amazon requires a white background. I know taking them on a darker background is much easier but then Amazon will suppress your listing. I was just recently approved for the coin category and so far I have quite a few listings up. The coins that are graded in holders are much easier to shoot because on them I crop out all the background. But that is why I am using a white background.

Do you have the capability to shoot them on a dark background and then circular crop the image and paste it into a white background?
Of course that would take a couple extra steps BUT the end result would be much better.

Another option for the white background is to make a small pedestal on which your coin stands. It produces a result in detail/lighting that is nearly indistinguishable from the different backgrounds, and has the added benefit of removing focus from the texture of the material behind the coin.

I still need a better camera but I have been playing with different settings, moved my lights way up, moved the camera closer, set the shutter speed way down and opened up the aperture. Much better pics from a point and shoot.

I love these do it your self aproaches. A small caution though. Building your own rig can become very addictive.... I am now coming up on 2 years of building and rebuilding my rig. I think developing your own rig teaches you so much more than just going out and getting an off the self system. You are more likely to end up with something of higher quality than you can get retail

I have spent quite a bit of $$$ on new equipment and playing around. I am able to take photos now that are quite acceptable for making Amazon listings. Here is some of my latest...

I purchased a canon xsi just to dedicate just to my copy stand...Getting great pictures and very happy with the results. Maybe a newer copy stand in the future with easier up/down and in/out features? who knows this old 1960's model is rock solid...lol
