I am seriously worried about this coin. It has a wonky luster break on the reverse and in the exact shape of a cross. Is this normal, or has it been cleaned or perhaps an ex jewelry job? Keep or return? What do you all think.

1901 it is. Perhaps tape or cord covered the reverse at some time. This date trades as bullion in circulated condition.

So should I try to acetone the reverse or leave it be. I want to get it graded. If it's gonna be a details coin I'm returning it. Thoughts?

Personally, I'd return it. It's not that great, and if you mess with it, you might have a problem with the return. Certainly not worth holdering.

I'm into it $400 after tax and everything. I wanted a nice high AU low ms example. I'll give a acetone treatment if nothing changes which I think will happen then it's getting returned, of course the seller didn't mention this and I thought it was just lighting giving off the effect. Thanks guys.

Acetone did nothing. Messaging seller now to return it or maybe exchange for a non issue example.

It's an AU-58 and worth $400. If you want a nice one for a type set, you'll have to spend a little more.
Acetone only takes off any tape residue left. Looks like the luster is disturbed in that area on reverse and nothing will restore it.

If you can return it do it.

My LCS sells nicer ones than that for under $400.

Gold is up a bit since I have bought one slabbed, but I think $400 would get you a low MS $5 half eagle still if you hunt it hard enough.

Here are some recent ebay sales though gold is up quite a bit in the past 3 months of ebay sales data available skewing some prices at the less than numismatic range of the transactions.
