Insight-On-Xxi-Montreal-Skyline-Coin-Embedded-In-Diamond-Poly/Plastic

Here is the coin is a heavy duty diamond enclosure, looks possibly to be some gift/gift bag item given to VIP attendees - those are not scratches just bad photography and didn't thoroughly clean it. it's been sitting on a shelf for 2 decades and was very dirty.

Thanks for anyone who can give me some ideas or resources about it, I would appreciate it.

Best regards,
Gary

I believe this is a sterling silver coin
Interesting packaging, I'm sure there's some collector out there that would pay a premium for it :)

Also this topic should be moved to the NCLT section of Canadian Coins Forum.

The coin is from the 1976 Montreal Olympics series which were issued individually and in sets. This is the $10 Skyline coin from Series I (0.925 silver).

I have not seen this type of packaging. Maybe done post-release from the mint?
Rest in Peace

Back in the 70's it was a common practice to put all kinds of stuff into acrylic. Coins were a favorite of a lot of these. I never saw an Olympic coin 'issued' or distributed this way, but I did see a lot of them mounted in plastic like this by individuals and souvenir shops in Ottawa. Personal preferences for some... not me.

Thanks Everyone so far and in Future on this one - it came with an almost complete set of every type of Montreal Olympics Coin collectables, however this one's had me stumped. If it was Glass instead of some sort of plastic, so probably not a gift for the "Judges" - I can dream right - LOL. No anything of esteem in the 1970's would have been glass and hallmarked.

Do you ever notice when your tight on funds, every piece of the items you collect is special and must be worth a lot. LOL

I had a nugget ring that some "really smart person" had mounted a 1929 Indian Head $5, right in the middle and it was mounted in a way as not to be removed. In convincing myself that who but a famous gambler would do something so cocky/stupid, I had it pegged at being owned by "Jimmy the Greek" and worth upwards of $100K - actual value of the coin, LOL. Maybe I am the only one that dreams like that, but might as well dream big. :)

Best - Gary Staley - Castro Valley CA
