My grandmother found this while metal detecting by the river in the early 70's. I've been told by a jeweler that it's bronze, and a restamped coin or token possibly used for a ferry. That's the only info I have been able to find. Thank you for taking a look.
Really hard to tell with stuff like this. Looks to have been struck from a hand-engraved die, based on the lettering, but that is a very good portrait for being hand engraved. I also like the snake skin pattern around the front.
My best guess is that it was either intended for jewelry, or this is an old hobby/school project. It is a little too crude to be those artistic tokens that are peddled online as "collectible" although maybe it would have flown in the 70s. I have seen similar stuff that was a metalworking school project, or just a hobbyist playing around with some custom dies.
