Please excuse my neophyte question but... is this type of thing common? Part B: I don't particularly collect for speculation but out of curiosity, how well do items like this retain their value or appreciate? Thanks!

These are not official RCM products, colourized by a German company, if you want an investment for coins, go read MR. Newman bio, his collection is or has just been auctioned, basically bought the best grade short mintage coin and amassed a great collection. Buy what you like in the highest grade possible, modern NCLT only about 1% holds value.

@ Thanks John, didn't notice your answer. Oh well.

The marketing of this item and other similar painted SMLs is somewhat deceptive. While the silver maple leaf is indeed minted by the Royal Canadian Mint, the coloured enhancement is apparently completed by a private German Mint and not a true release by RCM. Therefore the accuracy of the statement of 888 mintage is impossible to determine, obviously more could be bought and painted at any given time. Who's to compare #s on COAs? While to some they're interesting and eye appealing as a collector's item, it's doubtful they'd ever greatly increase in value.

Buying collector coin with any thought of it appreciating in value at some point in the future is most often the cause of great disappointment:-)

Not official RMC product, but RCM's basic bullion enhanced with the colour by 3-rd party company.
These type of items might be "hot" (re-sold for a profit) at the hype period (if it exists) only.
Otherwise, it for sure retain it's bullion value.

Since people collect different products (enchanced SML series - why not), so there are many similar items on the market.

Just browse ebay, or The Coin Shoppe online store (they keep many coins like these)....

Yes its an "enhanced" RCM bullion silver coin, done by other "Mints" .

Personally I like these type of coins , only the ones that have a 500 to 1000 mintage with a "CoA" I have/would purchase, but there are some nice 5000 mintage ones too,but those just are not for me.

Dont let people discourage you from collecting these if you like them, no one knows what anything will be worth to someone someday. These could be worth only bullion price someday or be highly sought after, no way to know really.

I just bought a few "Burning Devils" and I can say the quality is very good. Better then the first Burning maples.
