There can be lots of particular reasons for the non acquisition of coins. My interests extend across the whole of numismatics, ancient to modern, provided that the coin actually qualifies for circulation, or has actually circulated. I will always make an exception for pattern coins.
Pricewise, I have always cheerypicked. It follows that High prices will prevent me from buying, but that doesn't happen often, due to my wide ranging numismatic interests.
So my best answer is 'Can't find ANY coin at an atractive price.'

This poll went over rather well so far . It looks like cash funds is one of the main reasons why we are not buying the coins we really want . For me , believe it or not ,it's my wife coming down on me for spending too much money and buying too many coins . I'd like to tell her I can't control myself ,but that would really put me in the dog house . According to the poll I'm about the only member in this predicament .

I try to stick to my budget and make sure coin collecting does not interfere with my monthly financial responsibilities. At the same time I must confess I have more than a few times not bought a certain coin out of consideration to my girlfriend and our budget. That's why I almost never buy on impulse, although I missed some good deals that way (as well as avoided a couple of bad to really bad ones ) Thus I voted 'Cash Funds'.

If you have a wife and a mortgage, you shouldn't be spending a lot on coins. A good wife is far more valuable than coins. I know; I had one of the best until she died in tragic circumstances.

sel_69I: So sorry to hear that ... I'm not married, but we live together now for more than 10 years. And we don't have mortgage or anything similar. We have what we have and do what we do with what we have (ok, that sentence went rather really well or really bad, anyway I hope you get my meaning). All that said I don't think I spend a lot on coins. About 5 % of my income.

I voted for "Life's Unexpected Happenings"...Just heard back from local mechanic that my wife's a/c compressor went out on her car. $1027.00 bill will put a damper on coin buying for a while. Mid July heat + wife's car = getting the car fixed tomorrow!

Quote: Really, you can buy coins when you're sick. I can certainly agree with this, although I might not recommend it. I remember waking up the morning of one coin show feeling like the walking dead. I still got up and went. I ending up going to the doctor on Monday and found out I had a severe case of bronchitis and sinusitis.

Quote: Most of the coins that I am looking for are considered to be scarce or rare - they appear in the market once a year or less. Bingo. Most of the coins I need just don't show up (Most of the pieces on my list have less than 75 pieces know to exist in ANY grade.) When one does, then we start looking to see if I can come up with the money. One big problem with that is often they are used as a "come on" in a bulk lot of other more common pieces I don't need. In order to get one $300 - $400 coin I need, I have to buy 20 or 30 other pieces at around $30 apiece. So I have to layout $1K to get a $300 coin and $600 to $700 worth of duplicates. THAT eats up your budget fast, especially if the auction has more than one lot like that with a piece I can use.

Cash is a big problem for me because I am a YN and I dont have a job. Finding the right coin is also a problem that I frequently run into.

It was a mix between cash funds and life's unexpected happenings. See my wife and I recently bought a house. She wanted to do a "little bit of reno" work. That turned into stripping the kitchen, 2 bedrooms, and bathroom down to the floor joists and studs and taking down two walls. So, it was an unexpected amount of work and cost a lot more than planned. But you know what they say, "Happy Wife, .... broke husband!"

For me, its more not being able to find the right coin at the right price. The local dealers near me don't seem to be getting much new material in lately, so every time I go its the same stuff I didn't like the last time I was there....

I just spent considerable funds on new Remington alarm system to guard the coins I have. I have motion detector lights, wireless alarm, security camera and now Remington 870 Marine type 12 gauge shotgun ready for midnight callers. I also spend money on large bank deposit box just to safe guard most of my coins. This does tend to defeat the joy I get from sitting in the bath tub and throwing gold coins into the air and letting them hit me on the head. Just like Scrooge McDuck.

I have sold some coins at a decent profit, so that I could pay for repairs to my car. The investment upside on the coins had run out of steam. The timing of the coins sale worked out well.
Ulimately, a total loss, because cars would have to be the most efficient waster of money there is, apart from booze, drugs and gambling.

What terry8835 said. Sorta. I bought a house. Spending $$ to bring it up to speed and make a 'safe room'. If I buy coins now, gotta move 'em. And listening to my sister's angst over my nephew relocating for two to five. crap. Oh well, everything is past the SOL. And my daughter's drama over a breast biopsy. We re-keyed the new house and I bought a ladder today.
