I am a novice when it comes to ancient coins. I picked up a collection from a person that I have purchased from and sold antiques to for 20 years. In this collection were several ancients that I am in the process of identifying. This is one of those coins. I was told by one collector that it was definitely a coin from the Ptolemaic Kingdom and possibly from Cleopatra VII. Can anyone please verify this for me, or verify that it is not from her?
It is a very small coin measuring approximately 12mm.
The obverse is a right facing female bust and the reverse is an eagle with the body facing left and the head turning back to the right. There is some lettering around the eagle. If I need better pics, I will see what I can do.
Thank you for the information. Is there a chance that this is just another variety with the head facing the opposite direction? I am still so new to these ancients. I feel like I am almost drowning in information when it comes to them.
It's possible that it's an unrecorded issue, but it's most likely not Cleopatra at all. Here is an example of a tetradrachm of Ptolemy XII and Cleopatra VII from my collection.
