I was looking at some samples of this coin online, and noticed my one (that has been made into a pendant or fob), has some differences.

Mine

Sample - (notice the gap from the crown to the D)

There are also differences on the other side.

Then I came across this photo of a proof coin.

It looks to match the proof coin better. What do you guys think?
Are my eyes getting too old for this? or am I just looking to closely at things?

Cheers again :)

any chance one of them is a double florin and the other one is a florin?
what is the diameter of your coin?

Yes you are probably right Ottawa, I was not aware the double florin was separate from the standard florin.

The one I have is the same size as the Australian florin, 28.5mm

Still a little confused, this is advertised as a two shilling florin 1887. Could there be two variants?

Another question :)sorry for my lack of British coin knowledge.
I also have a 1887 shilling, but it has the young head on it. I am guessing there was a change over in that year?

dirtdiggler - yes, you are right about 1887 coins. Threepences, sixpences, shillings, florins and halfcrowns exist with both Young and Jubilee heads.

I was looking through a few coins and decided to look at the graders. If anything at least they would correctly identify a coin . Well I would hope so. Amazingly although not recorded in Davies British Silver coins there are differences in where the obverse lettering is placed. Last A almost touching bust of victoria and far away from the bust. The only differences recorded in the book concerns the cross on obv and rev and the different date variations and inverted 1 in victoria . But no mention of any other differences. So it appears we have new varieties a foot :) I looked at one coin from CGS.UK our graders in the UK and 1 from PCGS and they were both different obverses. Not sure how many rarities will be thrown up from this to go along with the Arabic 1 and and Roman I dates and inverted 1 in victoria for I which was a clogged die but nevertheless will be interesting to see in years to come
