I never even noticed this but is this an error? Half the penny's stairs are gone or smoothed out on the reverse.

A lot of the mid 1960s cent looked like this. Chuck Daughtrey thought it was caused by the design of the steps being hubbed so deeply that the metal from the planchet couldn't reach that depth of the coin. Thus no steps. (that is what I was told as a theory as to why this happened)

So the steps were intended to be the highest relief on the reverse and came out the lowest. Ha ha. Sounds logical to me.
