Hello again forum members!

I've had this coin for over 25 years now, and the everytime time I've checked the Krause catalogue to find it's value it just says rare.

I would really appreciate it if anyone has any info on this coin or it's approximate value.

The "rare" probably refers to the silver version. Only very few of that were made, and the Schön catalog lists a value of €10,000. But such pieces will usually be sold at auctions, and with so few available, it does not make too much sense to quote a price. What you have is most likely the Cu-Ni version; almost 34 million were made in 1968 ...

Thanks everyone for responding. Yes unfortunately there is a B under the date of this coin so it must be the nickel version.

Just one question. If this coin is nickel should it be magnetic?

It's not pure nickel, it's cupronickel (75% copper, 25% nickel). Not magnetic.

My Krause (2006) doesn't mention a "rare" 1968 silver coin at all.

With precision scales it should be possible to tell the difference: The silver piece is 15.0 g, the Cu-Ni piece is 13.2 g. But as so extremely few of the 1968 silver coins were made, I would not buy scales just to find out. What is a little odd is that in 1969 the 5 CHF coin was silver again, for the last time and just for this one year. Had to do with silver prices back then - the ultimate decision of the Swiss government to do away with the silver coins was made some time in 1969 ...

A cheap 0.1 gram accuracy scale will help to put away everything.
