For me Canada's 150th is a decisive milestone. So I caved in... and purchased the subscription. Oh well.

NCLTs-Of-Significance

Few comments on the coin: the print lacks brightness, contrast and is pixelated. This isn't quite "retina quality" we see on the RCM web site. I'm not 100% sure but it appears that the color was applied on top of an engraved bird. This effect provides convincing relief. Too bad the image is so dark.

The finish is called "matte proof" (very close to bullion), diameter is 34mm and has 15.87 g of 9999 silver. Mintage is set at 25,000 for the 1st coin of this 13-coin series. Being that the 1st coin relates to Ontario, I suspect that actual mintages will go down from here, and perhaps spike up for the Quebec coin.

Priced at $45, this coin isn't too overpriced and it comes with a nice wooden presentation case and 1 year free Canadian Geographic subscription.

I do not expect secondary market hysteria will develop over this series. Each coin is released about every other month until July 2017. By that time, flippers / speculators (if any) will have dropped out and the typical NCLT downward trend will have already taken place. But this is fine with me.

This is a piece of history that I want to capture and leave to my children.

Great post, Canadian_coins, thank you for showcasing the coin and expressing yourself about purchase motives.

But....seeing this subscription, I have very pessimistic feeling.
Cause I want to ask:
does really Mint (marketing people there) think, that they can mint out literally low-quality whatever, put double-date on it and sell as "150 Canada Anniversary"?

What exactly on this coin-postcard shows something significant and related? Painted Loon? At least they should do the same, but engraved, Proof / Mate Proof / BU.
And where is Ontario here - again painted Loon?

2013 O Canada coins were priced $40 each and much better designed.

Well, I disappointing by this.
IMO, this is few steps down compares 1992 25c Provinces set...

It just imo, and anyway good to see that people like to get simple Canadian items.

I just received the first coin with the elegant wooden box. I really, really like it.

@canadian_coins: Great post,

@silveroid: Too bad you are disappointed by this series. I am not.

This is a somewhat unique series at a reasonable price, considering the idea of a print representing each province is different compared to all the various commemorative provincial coins featured in the past for other occasions. My only detracting thought is provincial coins really have no connection whatsoever to Canada's 150th birthday other than that's used as the stated event. The series is somewhat historically misleading because upon confederation Canada was divided into only four provinces - Ontario, Quebec, Nova Scotia, and New Brunswick -- there was not 10 provinces and 3 territories 150 years ago so it seems odd to commemorate provincial boundaries that didn't yet exist.

Another reason I'm not hitting "buy now" button is that in 2017, when whatever is chosen as the theme for each denomination of circulation coin, undoubtedly a similar theme/s as well issued in NCLT, will become most commonly associated to Canada's 150th anniversary in future years.

But for those who like the series, nothing wrong with that.....it's a matter of enjoying whatever it is each of us collect.

****
Just to add, I think the 1967 Centennial series will always be supreme because each coin was symbolic of a value or virtue, chosen for significance to our country:

Instead of a photo featured from a magazine, it's unfortunate a similar tradition of this nature isn't carried forward, 50 years later.

I have to admit, I thought this was going to be a very different topic based on its title! I was expecting a discussion of coins that set a new standard or direction for the RCM's NCLT releases. I might have to start such a topic!

Turning to the topic as presented, I agree that the 150th anniversary of Canada's Confederation is a milestone event and worthy of significant commemoration. I expect that over the next 12 to 18 months I will add several "150" commemorative coins to my collection.

This particular series, however, won't be included among my purchases - painted pictures on silver planchets is just not my "thing." I am hopeful that the RCM releases several coins that celebrate true milestone events in Canada's history - those will be coins that fit far better in my collection.

I expect the release of "150" coins to suit every taste between now and the end of next year - there'll be something for everyone!

As always, outstanding images canadian_coins!

150th anniversary should have been celebrated with a one year type circulation coin or set, coins produced in large enough numbers for all to enjoy.

All of the 2017 circulation coins will be special designs and will celebrate the 150th anniversary of Confederation. In fact, the only way to get the 'regular' circulation coins next year will be to buy special uncirculated sets.

I'm sure there will be several face value for face value 5-coin, 6-coin, 10-coin etc. sets of circulation coins as well. I'm sure the fine silver proof set will be fantastic as every denomination will feature irregular images, similar to the 1967 set. It would be nice if there was a $20 gold to go with it like in '67.

Thanks for the post.
My sense is that these will be available for
less than issue before the end of the year.
High mintage, pixelated image, not for me.
It is a pic of the Lucky Loonie from the back.

The US and Canadian coin market are stagnant. Look at RFD, no cheerleading for a coin in over 12 months. RCM's NCLT are dead to flippers. Oh, yeah the one or two a year exception applies here.

Remember a member here elkslayer? Probably the biggest flipper of RCM's NCLT, when was the last time he talked about a flip?

No telling how many years it will take for RCM to come back.

Collectors only in this market.

These "days" too will be in the future looked upon as the "good old days"!!

This whole collection is a "story" to share with all. Some just do not like story telling. They only like keeping their 40 dollars in envelopes to display on their shelves.

It must be a great conversation piece pulling out all those crinkly envelopes to share how they saved those dollars by not buying this series. LOL LOL LOL LOL

Pardon my lack of comprehension but what "story" is being illustrated by this set?

If your reference is in regard to banknote/serial number collecting, perhaps you might not realize that the hobby of numismatics is the study or collection of coins, paper currency, and medals? In an ideal situation, there's a crossover between collecting various different types because it's all connected. It serves no worthwhile purpose that one segment be looked down upon for the sake of promoting another.

Okay, yes I do know the 150th Anniversary is an event that will be celebrated by Canadians next year. Even by those who do not buy NCLT.

But my question was how this series relates to story telling.
