Doing my first roll search and coming across many "modern" pennies with VDB.

Some have it, some do not.

Sorry for the newbie question but what gives?

I looked at the US Coin Facts but didn't find anything. I even searched for VDB but got a bunch of posts about 1909 S VDB as expected.

VDB only appeared on 1909 cents.

VDB is on the lower left side of the jacket on moderns. Maybe those without are worn?

Any that are without are the result of a worn or filled die.

Yes, the VDB should appear on the bottom of the shoulder of all Lincoln cents since 1918. The stamping has always been kind of weak, and it wears away eventually.
A much larger VDB did appear on both the P & S versions of the 1909 Lincoln. Each was minted in much smaller quantities than the 1909 cents without the VDB. That 1909 S VDB is considered the "Holy Grail" by many Lincoln Cent collectors!

The 1973 cent, "no VDB" is considered to have a premium; however, it takes extremely close scrutiny to determine if the 73 does not have a VDB because the imprint is so weak.

Odd I can't find anything about this 73 variety. Usually such things are noted on the https://www.coppercoins.com web site but nothing there. Any links or reference to where this is documented?

The 1909 vdb is really going up in value. A local dealer I am associated with sells them in About good condition for $15 and surprisingly they sell quickly.

Bobbi, aside the websites and off line resources (e.g. books) forum members have, these are some of the other resources I use. The top three provide images when you click on the target. The bottom two are indices with written information. All five are "cent" specific and some have denomination counterparts online, too.

Other resources include, but are not limited to:

The Official Red Book: "A Guide Book of United States coins"
The Official Red Book: "A Guide Book of Lincoln Cents"
Cherry Picker's Guide To Rare Die Varieties of United States coins (Vols 1 and 2)

The Official Red Book also publishes books on other denominations.

Thank you, JHS. I just started to look at one of the sites, and can tell it would be possible to spend forever looking at coin sites.
