Anyone know why the 1928 Peace dollar brings such a high premium?

Because it was the lowest mintage in the set. However the difference in price lessens in comparison to some other coins in the sets as you reach the higher grades.

As philney mentioned, it has the lowest mintage of the series so that makes it the key date just as a 1909-S VDB is the key date for Lincoln cents. In Mint State though, the 1934-S is rarer than 1928 and multiples more expensive.

Thanks a lot for the info guys! I was just curious because I'm not to new to coin collecting but like everything you are always learning and I was flipping through a Peace dollar book that was in my safe and I noticed it had every year so I looked it up in the Red Book and was just shocked at how much it was worth! I figured it had something to do with mintage but also thought there might be some other reason. Any way I love coin collecting I mean obsessed with it and everything I have was left to me b/c my dad and his dad did some collecting so I am still trying to realize the stuff I have! I'm only 24 and I am trying to get a jump on things since I already have a good start and plus I love doing it. To me this Forum is the best thing since sliced bread b/c No one I know likes coins and thinks I am a nut collecting And my dad died when I was to young to learn anything about the coins so Again thanks a lot for the info
