Sometimes you get copper coins that were stored or shipped improperly - by which I mean in a bag with other coins - as a result of which they now have many contact marks, especially along the rims. Which in case of copper coins are bright red and particularly distracting.

Can you do something to "encourage" the said coin to retone?

Assuming the necessity of retoning is due to contact marks only, not due to prior cleaning.
