This is just incredible. So I ran across an auction that clearly wasn't as advertised, and I thought I was being cool enough to tell him it wasn't an overdate--and why. After all, he could get dinged if someone discovers he's sold them a three buck coin for $$$.

Yet, after my effort to clearly state why it's not the 1888/7 overdate, he adds to his auction:

quote:
Informed by ebay member appears to be an "8 over 7. Snow-1", estimated value in VG or lower condition $8,000. - $12,000.

Granted, I'm not much of an expert, so I must have convinced him of the opposite! Some people are unbelievable.

I can understand why he would think it's an overdate; but to take your comments and twist them is wrong, especially considering he states that he is not familiar with this variety.

I also think it's interesting that he can get close-up pics of the date but his full coin pics are useless.

Yeah, I suppose I'll give him that much--the last 8 does look strange at first glance.
However, the markers on this coin are all wrong; it doesn't remotely resemble the S-1.
I'll conclude this is circulation damage or an extremely worn die.

I agree with you. I had one like this not long ago and thought it was an overdate at first glance. However, it didn't take long to realize that it was wear.

I think he/she is just confused. When you can't set the date on your digital camera its a shame. Also there aren't any other coins being offered so their ignorance might be a fact? Just some food for thought ;)

Rons,
You're probably right, and I don't want to seem too harsh--or uppity that my advice is worth something! Then again, if the seller is unfamiliar with the coin, they shouldn't make that claim on the auction. As it stands, somebody has bid $100 already for a $3 coin on that claim.

I'm not sure why you are criticizing him. He quoted your comments in his listing. I don't think he should have to cancel the listing. Obviously, anybody who placed a bid PRIOR to when he added in your comment should be notified and given the opportunity to retract their bids; however, his listing is not misleading at all right now.

On second thought, it looks like perhaps you posted this thread before he edited his listing with your comments on his coin. I'm guessing you would be ok with his listing right now.

Mahgobbi, yes--I give him credit for posting some other views on the coin.
