I'm looking at filling some holes in my silver dollar collection from '74 to '80. The price difference between the sets and the singles is almost negligible. My question is, from a strictly quality/preservation standpoint, what product (single or prestige set) do you think would provide the best chance of getting a completely original dollar coin that has never been removed from its packaging and handled?

the oins in the PLiofilm seats are standard business strike coins, so they might be uncirculated but not always great coins. I think the double dollar sets had proof coins in them, however they were loose, and could easily been removed/handled/switched for PL coins etc not to mention toning.

In my opinion I don't think these coins will ever be worth their weight in nickel, so I would only buy the PL set and be done with it.

@ ace you're possibly thinking of a different era. After 1967 the PL (uncirculated sets), no silver dollar.

@ quatchi In my collection, I have both original cased SD and Prestige (double dollar) sets. Both types were said to be issued in Specimen finish although most common is BU. Odds of non-handling would likely be in favour of the singles (which if I recall correctly came in a capsule inside the case beginning in 1974). However, by far my personal favourite -- some of silver dollars in the Prestige sets exhibit exceptional toning, more so than the singles. Either way, given the huge mintages, you shouldn't have any difficulty finding a suitable specimen for your collection! They're beautiful in their simplicity...

That's the beauty of the 71-80 Double Dollar sets you got both the Silver Dollar and the nickel dollar - when I broke mine up I kept the SDs for the SD collection and used the rest of the coins in the various books - can't do that after 1980 as all the coins are proof. Keep in mind though that the 1971 and 1972 Double Dollar sets did not have a Silver Dollar they were only available as singles for those years

@Quatchi: It shouldn't be a problem to find undisturbed individual SDs in their capsules and clamshell cases from the period in which you're interested. If you don't collect the other denominations, I would suggest pursuing the individually-packaged SDs - the sets do not offer any increase in SD quality. Also, no need to buy more than you plan to collect.

Thanks for the opinions everyone, I'll consider them when I make my decision.
