I didn't even know what a collection dump was and I had barely heard of doubled dies 3+ years ago when I got started with our hobby, but there one was on my desk in front of me. My bank teller friend had called me to let me know that someone had brought in a bunch of old coins to be counted and turned in. Indeed, the bag had a bunch of uncirculated 1970's "S" Lincoln Memorial Cents, a few Indian Heads, and a bunch of Wheaties. I even remember taking out the cent with the blob of metal on it 'cause it looked cool (My first "
Cud" as I would find out later). I also found 3 cents that looked like they had some really extreme doubling on them, so I pulled them out as well (One of these became my first post here at CCF where I found out it was fake). I then cashed the rest back in with the bank.
Fast-forward to now and I realize that what I had was a collection dump and a wasted the opportunity because I didn't know anything about Errors or Varieties. How many
DDO's,
WAM's, RDV's, RPM's, and
Retained Cuds did I miss?
I have long wondered if I would ever get this kind of chance again... and then came last night.
I posted the 1941-P 1DO-002 I found in a bag of a couple thousand Wheaties, but that was just the tip of the iceberg as it turns out. I found more than 25 Error and Variety Cents. Below I offer pictures of some of the better ones as a token of hope for all of us, and proof that they are out there (Descriptions are below each pic):
