What Is The Oldest Coin With The Year Stamped On It?

nosar New Member Switzerland 7 Posts	Posted 07/27/2016 07:52 am I recently purchased a coin similar to this, Lithuanian coin with the date stamped 1509 This is the oldest genuine coin that I ever saw with the year on it. Kamnaskires Pillar of the Community United States 7066 Posts	Posted 07/27/2016 08:57 am Yes, Nosar, many BC coins have dates on them. As you suggest, these are from other calendar systems. A number of cities, for example, used the Seleucid calendar that started in 312 BC. The ancient kingdoms of Parthia and Elymais used this dating system on a number of their coins as well. Greek letters were used for dates, with each letter having a numerical equivalent. Once armed with the numerical equivalents to the letters, figuring out the dates is pretty easy...but of course you need to know specifically which calendar system is being used. That system tells you, essentially, when year zero is - like 312 BC for the Seleucids. Report this Post to the Staff
