A few of the new releases have surprised me or made me curious. The Coral Reef coin, for example. I've never associated the type of reef shown on the coin with Canada - I thought its water were generally too cold to support such a reef.
I'm also curious about the subject of the Wanduta: Portrait of a Chief coin. Is Wanduta a famous First Nations figure in Canada? I haven't really been able to find much about him via various internet searches. It seems a little odd that he was selected for such a prominent coin - five ounces of silver and full colour on the reverse - and yet be relatively "unknown."
I find the Maple Leaf/Canada Geese coin a creative expression of two rather overdone themes. It's not for me, but I can certainly understand its appeal for many collectors. It seems very well done (based on images I've seen). Its size and weight, however, suggest a fairly thin coin.

$20 1 oz. Pure Silver Coloured Coin - Baby Animals: Caribou - Mintage: 5,500
The reef is supposed to represent BC waters.
"Designed by Canadian illustrator Jesse Koreck, your coin features an underwater scene that includes a number of the marine species found in the waters of Canada's West Coast. The image presents the underwater scene as viewed from a deep water reef, looking up toward the turquoise waters of the surface. The brightly coloured marine life includes a large Atolla jellyfish, several yelloweye rockfish, and a highfin dragonfish swimming around soft and hard corals with other vertebrate and invertebrate organisms along the sea floor."
I have to admit that I was totally unaware of Wanduta but here is the history lesson from the Mint:
"As a spiritual healer, Wanduta was a leading defender of traditional Indigenous practices. He travelled to Ottawa to protest the federal government's restrictive policies; but upon his return, Wanduta was arrested for "hosting" the dance in Rapid City and was convicted for this violation of the giveaway ban. On January 26, 1903, he was sentenced to four months of hard labour and imprisonment at the Brandon Jail. Attempts to secure clemency proved futile as Wanduta served his entire sentence, but he remained undeterred. He continued his spiritual practices after his release; in doing so, Wanduta cemented his reputation as a heyoka, a respected member of sacred Dakota societies, who was revered for his abilities to help his people, and is remembered today for his efforts to keep tradition alive. "

Received the email notification from my Mint Rep yesterday and promptly ordered just the Maple Leaf Silhouette coin.
Admittedly the price is a little steep when compared to the 2016 baby feet coin with a similar mintage.
That said, I think it will be a hot item and is reminiscent of the reflection coins issued last year.
I didn't order the coloured 1oz version of the original and would have also passed on this one were it not for the Canada Geese.

The Maple Leaf Shaped coin mintage is 22,000. One of the highest mintage NCLT coins outside of the x for x series. Its a nice looking coin and is half the price of the 1 oz Maple Leaf shaped coin.
Plenty to go around, so will it be "hot? No.
The first coin sold out rapidly and held its value for the most part. Then came the second which is not doing as well with it still available at issue price. Now this is the 3rd maple leaf shaped coin. How much more are they going to milk this design?

@Proof Nut: The silhouette coin is definitely an attractive piece. I noticed you mentioned that it was the coin's inclusion of Canadian Geese that triggered you to buy it - do you collect coins featuring geese as a subset of your overall collection? Though the coin isn't cheap, it is the least expensive maple leaf-shaped coin the RCM has released so far - a good entry point for many collectors. I hope you enjoy it! Please update this thread with an image of your coin when it arrives.

Quote: The full application of colour over the engraving captures the beautiful complexities of Wanduta's traditional regalia, circa 1913. I noticed this in the description of the Wanduta coin on the RCM web site - I'm intrigued. Has the RCM mastered the art of colour printing over engraved surfaces? To date, I believe the colour on most (all?) of its coins has been applied over flat surfaces. If the colour really is applied over an engraved Wanduta portrait, it could really be a big step forward. Would be great to hear the impressions of a purchaser of the coin when they have it in hand.

Yes, wait list upon wait list but none indicated to be approaching sellout. We've gone down this road before....Cabbage Patch Doll marketing 101, create the illusion of limited quantities and watch what a motivator that becomes.
However I notice the maze coin now indicates 79% sold. But that's still fairly low, not really a good sign considering the promotion and release of it is already yesterday's news.
