I'm using this site to value the coins http://www. (124) Not Allowed - Auto-Removed .com/coins/1878-1921-Silver-Morgan-Dollar-Value.html

I am just getting started and would like to collect a few.

Looking at the most common and least expensive coins, everything I see selling on ebay is a few dollars over where the coins are valued.

Is that site giving a correct value, or do coins on ebay typically go for more than they should. If that is the case, is there a better site or should I just keep a closer eye on auctions and hope to find a good deal.

I see it won't let me post the site, but it is (124) Not Allowed - Auto-Removed and the cheapest are listed as 21-22 dollars for good condition and extra fine is only a 2 or 3 dollars higher.

If the site is blocked then there is probably good reason not to trust it. More importantly, I'd recommend not making any other attempts to tell us what the site is, or else risk the wrath of the mods. I know it can be frustrating, but those are the rules!

I recognize the site from the fragment left over in the OP.

Those prices aren't accurate for the various conditions of Morgan dollars.

ebay, advanced search, sold listings is the best gauge of price out there and if it isn't, Heritage is.

Welcome to CCF too.

I used that site when I first got back into collecting as I was just hitting the junk silver bins (and the bulk Morgan bins by grade).

ebay and Heritage are the best for price.

Prices aren't fixed by any means either.

For example, here is some data I compiled at the end of June for PCGS certified Ike dollars on ebay.

A-Question-About-Morgan-Silver-Dollar-Values.

Quite a wide range of prices paid for the same coin in the same grade. Learn that range and when you are in the lower end on a coin you want, buy it.

As for the links on CCF, tread very lightly at first as there are rules on this topic.

Welcome aboard though. Best place for free info on coins on the net.

CCF is a good place to share our hobby .. I hope you stick around.

Price guides, in my experience will just get you in the ballpark.
Ones like RedBook are known to be high, but a good source of
basic information. Many dealer will use CDN/Greysheet.

A online guide that is not to bad is
http://numismedia.com/rarecoinprices/fmv.shtml

As Buckeyecoinguy posted looking at past sales from Heritage
and ebay will help you get a good range coins are actually
selling for.

Many ebay seller have to add a few dollars to their selling price,
to cover the fee's. The fee's for ebay and paypal can be between
15 to 20 percent.

If you go to the US Coin Facts Section here, for any coin there are links to real historical pricing at Heritage and ebay. Let's take Morgan Dollars for example, more specifically an 1879 Morgan.

Heritage adds the "Buyers Premium" to all sales which is considerable. I would not be using Heritage to buy common Morgans.

The buyer's premium is added onto the sale price, but I consider that fair reporting. The buyer will always take the 17.5% premium into account when bidding so max bid + 17.5% is what the coin went for. The seller's commission of 10% is ignored as it is irrelevant to the price realized at auction, just having a bearing on how much the seller gets which is max bid - 10%. Relying on HA does give you a distorted view of the market however, as lots of coins in the overall market sell between $10 and $200 and almost nothing in that range will go to auction.

Yes, I noticed that most of the coins on HA are MS quality coins, but not all. I see a 1916 LSQ in Fine condition. Of course this is a rare coin in almost any condition. If you want to play on HA you are going to pay.
