This one I found last night also from a bankroll. It looks like the letter E on Monroe's face. This one is also not incused.

Pretty cool Thingee. I have been under the impression that extra rim letters were caused by coins hitting at just the right angles, easy enough. This one does not show any impression of the rim (that I can see) around the letter. Am I wrong to expect that a hit hard enough to leave that would also leave maybe edge marks from the rim outside of the letter ? Or is this caused by something else ?

O.K. So I got curious halfway through writing this and since I own a couple hammers....Yikes...Coin Gods forgive me ! Anyway, so I hit this dollar on the cheek with another dollar on its edge, and then I hit it on the forehead the same way. The pictures follow. I hit it a total of three times, of varying force, and was not able to reproduce anything like that without alot of rim impression as you will see. I guess I am still wondering how this happened -or if it does happen this way but only like yours occasionally.Hmmmmmmmm...
The cheek hit was medium force:

You can see the hard hit plainly on the forehead over his left eye, the light hit was to the forehead over the right eye, you can just see one edge impression there, but no letter:

I can only assume it took a hit from another coin during or after it was struck as I can't figure it happening any other was coming straight of an uncirculated bankroll. Interesting shots you took there. I bet it was fun hammering those in. Lol.

How fascinating! Have you found another part of the coin where that feature may have transferred? If it's something like a clash, I don't know how it would reach such an incuse part of the die (relief area on the coin)

Or you may have just a damaged coin from contact from other coins. It the letter transferred of the rim of another coin, it would just be damage. That what it looks like to me.

I'll hang on to it and put it aside. Thanks for the input. I appreciate it.
