Just wanted some expert opinions about this coins authenticity. I'm much more familiar with denarii but since Caligula is pricey for a nice example I thought I'd pick up a cheaper bronze for now. Does that "gunk" on the coin look like it was done recently? 11.57g, 27mm Any and all info is greatly appreciated, Thanks CCF! http://www.ebay.com/itm/As-CALIGULA...AOSwZVlXiL1Y

The coin looks fine to me though a bit off center on the reverse.

This seller has a very beautiful legionary counterstamp "head of eagle" over a coin from "Caesar Augusta" (actually Zaragoza in Spain)

Now that is an excellent Caligula ! Based on current low summer prices I feel it is an absolute steel at $100 (US) a great pick up at $150 and still reasonable at $200 !
It should clean up nicely

By the way this is a Hispania issue The mints in Spain began switching over to Imperial coinage at this time and ended local coins by the reign of Claudius.
Around two years ago a member here purchased a similar one (better though) at my prodding. He was a new collector and hesitant to spend the required amount (over $300) but I assured him it was the type of purchase he would not regret. Besides I liked it so much I gave him my personal assurance that I would take it if he changed his mind. Of course he never did !
If you can get this for under $150 (US) I will give you the same offer !

Right now my internet connection is poor. As soon as I get back to the civilized part of Cape Cod I want to look and see what else the seller has. My search through France & Germany last week found absolutely nothing ! Spain is an excellent place for coins !

Well then congratulations ! I think it will clean up nicely. There are some spots that look like they may be the stubborn sort but I believe 90% of the surface area should be relatively clean once you can do some less aggressive treatments. I also believe the surfaces will likely have a nice olive green and black patina. In my collection this is the best type !
Let us see some before and after pics when the new 'baby' arrives.

Sounds perfect! Although iv never cleaned a coin before lol should I soak it in olive oil and then use a q-tip to try and brush the gunk away?

First soak it in acetone for one day to remove any and all oils. This can cone from having been handled or having something applied. Then place in clean jar on soft surface (paper towel) and fill with distilled water. Leave to soak for one week and repeat with new water. Brush occasionally with soft nylon brush. The process requires some time and effort but that is why the seller did not do it. When done properly the results can be impressive. Leave the oil and other treatments for last.

I purchased this bronze coin of Tiberius from a Spanish seller last year. Similar sort of patination and "dirt" on the surface. I admit to being somewhat impatient with these things but I determined the black surface patina was hard and solid enough to discreetly use a brass brush in addition to the nylon. I would have been wise to wait longer but my enthusiasm got the better of me ! I recommend patience though as you are a 'newb' to cleaning.
