I'll guess EF-40.

(Bigger pics would eliminate some of the guesswork.)

I would go with VF30-35. The marks around the field and cheeks on the obverse is distracting. Reverse looks nicer.

As far as details, I'm still seeing a strong EF-40.

I can't tell what I'm seeing on the obverse (cheek and fields front and behind head). Is that corrosion, or abrasion, or something else?

It's not corrosion or abrasion. Looking at it under a loupe it looks like a clear shiny substance, almost like clear nail polish. I don't want to try and clean it off. You can't see it unless it's under magnification.

Interesting.
I know there was a time when it was considered a good idea to coat coins with a layer of shellac to "protect" the coin. Large Cents were a common recipient of a layer of shellac.
I wonder if that is what it is?
(A less interesting possibility is tape residue.)
