Looking at it under a loupe it looks like a clear shiny substance, almost like clear nail polish. I don't want to try and clean it off. You can't see it unless it's under magnification. I know there was a time when it was considered a good idea to coat coins with a layer of shellac to "protect" the coin. Large Cents were a common recipient of a layer of shellac. I wonder if that is what it is? (A less interesting possibility is tape residue.) Report this Post to the Staff
