I got some red Olympic coins from Woolworths today, and I noticed that one of them has a lighter shade of red than the others.

Would anyone like to speculate as to how this came about? Would you classify this as a variety or as an error?

I apologise for the lighting of the pictures below - it makes the red look much darker than it actually is.

These coins have only been released today.
How can you be certain that this slightly off colour coin is the "Scarce" one?
Maybe the darker one could be the "Scarce" one.

Because I've got over 30 of them, half of which I gave to other family members. This is the only one that looks like this, so I presume it is the scarce one. A quick check of my mint set confirms this.

If you leave a few of these coins colour up on the dashboard of your car you will find that they will ALL fade in colour.

The dark red looks like it's red applied over black.

I am not collecting these so can't compare any.

I reckon that in the case of the latter one, they left out a step during the colour application process, because the coloured ring is usually made up of 20 raised bumps, but these bumps are missing from the light red coin. The colour is still there, but the bumps are missing.

Unfortunately, I'll probably never know why this is, because the mint is very secretive about how they apply the colour to these coins. If anyone has any further information about why these bumps are missing, please reply to this thread.
