Jolteon1698, to CCF.
Nice looking gold coin, not my forte to judge.
Lets see what other CCF members have to say.

It's not in my copy of Encyclopedia of US Gold coins. The smallest denomination listed is one dollar.

Perhaps it was privately minted?

I've come across mention of California gold coins made before the mint could supply; I think this is one but wanted to know if anyone knew for sure. Thanks for your help so far folks!

Here's a coin that looks just like yours. http://www.ebay.com/itm/1869-G-GOLD...OLLAR-ROUND-

I am not qualified to determine if your coin is the same or a copy.

California minted "territorial gold" coins in fractional dollar amounts. I don't know whether it was a private mint or a state-run mint.

Try http://en.numista.com and search for "california territorial gold". Your dollar shows up there.
