I have a 1961 proof set and was thinking about getting it graded at PCGS. What should I expect to get?

They normally can range from 65-68. I don't believe I have ever seen a 61 proof set past 68

Most of the coins will get high grades like PR-65 and 66, but it's not worth the cost of getting it done. The only Proof coins from this era that are worth the grading fees are the pieces that have cameo devices on both sides. Those were the first Proof coins that were made from a new set of dies, or coins that were made from a set of dies that had recently been repolished. All modern U.S. Proof coins now have the cameo finish.

If you don't know that a comeo Proof looks like, here is an example. This is 1963 quarter is a cameo Proof coin. The devices have a frosted finish and the fields are mirrored.

This Modern Proof quarter is an ultra cameo. If this finish were on the 1963 quarter it would be a big deal and make that piece and expensive coin. On a modern Proof it's not big deal because many of them are ultra cameo.

I think the 61 sets would sell for around $20-23

If I remember correctly, the mint originally sold them for $2.10.

The old method of acid etching the dies looked so much better in cameo than the modern laser etching. It almost had a satiny look to it, where the modern ultra cameos look harsh

I agree with BadThad. If they were cameo's, I would have said go for it.
