That looks like queen Victoria, which was on our coinage from 1858-1901 the size looks close to a 20 cent piece or quarter size, not sure about the back, but does look somewhat like the back of her quarter http://www.coinsandcanada.com/coins...ts-1870-1901It could have been holed and used as a pendant.

It certainly looks like there is a crown with a shield below it and some floral design around it on the other side.
Can you make out anything from the lettering around the head?

no there is no legiable lettering. I agree I believe it looks like queen victoria. the banding around the portrait that has the lettering is what I cant find on many other coins. I think it looks similar to the quarter but dont think its a match.

At almost 40mm in diameter it is much larger than any Victorian Canadian coin.

The top of the shield doesn't look flat on this one, though.

It is probably a Victoria Jubilee commemorative medal 1887 or 1897. The obverse is a perfect match for the generic medals, but the reverse was frequently tailored for local municipalities to incorporate the town's coat of arms (and the mayor's name in large type)

awsome thanks for the information. how hard do you think it would be to find the town it was minted from... is it worth trying to find out? I have been looking at numerous variations and havent seen one that resembles the back.

I think that you have something like this: It is the generic obverse for the 1897 Diamond Jubilee medal. I must have at least 10 of these, but this was the only one I could find to photograph. It is one of the mid range size @ 32 mm. The majority go at 39 mm.

This example is from the 1887 Golden Jubilee, the reverse being a standard civic giveaway. 39 mm.
