A friend of mine called and said he found a 1999 Pennsyvania State Quarter, P Mint that is solid "silver". There is no copper showing on the rim at all. He is supposed to send me some pics through e-mail, so I'll post them if needed.

Any ideas or is this a common thing?

Maybe it's from one of those plated sets they hawk on TV.

It could be from a proof set.

Proof Sets should have the "S" mint mark. I agree that it is probably plated, just like the 24K gold ones, and the hologram ones, and the platinum ones, etc. Even eBayers do not pay much more than market value of the original UNC coin......... if even that.

NOTE: If your friend got it in change, chances are that it was pilfered from a set by a kid, and spent.
