I bought a 1873 Shield nickel for $4. It is really corroded and black. What is different about Shield nickels that causes this to happen to them and no other coin. Also is my Shield nickel an open or closed 3. I can't tell. Sorry about the picture quality I can try for a better picture if need be.

Looks like an open 3 but due to so much damage, can't really tell. I'd pass on this one.

Same here. If it was closed, it's open now!

That was probably in the ground and dug up by someone with a metal detector. Other nickels will turn black and corrode if in the ground long enough. Unless it was a really special and rare coin, coins in that condition lose nearly all their value.
