This coin strikes me as extremely suspicious. I have told the seller about it twice before but he has not removed it from ebay. If real, PCGS completely wrecked the grading, which I find impossible. Likewise, for this cert number there is no image of the coin on the PCGS site. The coin looks worn, well beyond a weak strike, has no luster, and the denticles are uneven. To me it looks like a Chinese counterfeit coin in a fake holder. Thoughts? http://www.ebay.com/itm/1892-1-Choi...22211232543? Edited by shermae 08/06/2016 7:13 pm

If that's a PCGS MS64, I will stay with ANACS..

Wow! Even if weak strike there in no way this is MS64!
Looking whole slab, the "PCGS" emblem on the front lower corner looks suspicious to me. Almost engraved into plastic.

MS-64 is a wear grade, not an eye appeal grade. This coin is a technical MS64 based on the relatively clean fields and cheek and the absence of circulation rub.
Yes, the toning is not very attractive. Yes, the strike is terrible. Yes, the eye appeal is low.
The cert is real, it won't have an image because this is not in a PCGS Secure / TrueView slab.
The price is excessive for the appeal; MS64 and up are scarce grades for this date, but it's priced about 20-25% above where it should be. Top end for a 1892 in (attractive) MS64 is 1.1k-1.2k, this coin is far from attractive, at least to me, and I wouldn't see it bringing more than 850-900 on a good day.

It looks good to me. It may be a very nice coin for the grade as well. Not an easy coin to grade from photographs given the type of toning and all the images are out of focus. Definitely not a Chinese counterfeit, though.

I still feel the denticles are suspect. At 10 o'clock they are very tightly grouped and crooked. At 4 o'clock they are more widely spaced.

Late die state of VAM-4 IMO.

The seller is fairly well known in upstate central NY. I don't think the seller would knowingly sell a fake.

I actually think it's a VAM-3 with doubling on the wreath. http://www.vamworld.com/1892-P+VAM-3edit to add - I just saw your post about this seller @Oddibemcd. I lived outside of Canandaigua until about 7 years ago. I recall a Sports card dealer on Main St. but never knew they had coins. I'll have to check them out when I'm up there later this year.

Wish this could have been a "Guess the Grade" to start with!

This coin would certainly benefit from a skillful dip.

To me, whether it's counterfeit is irrelevant; the coin is just plain ugly.

The coin looks flat but that may be due to the photo. From photo it looks more like VF than MS64. However, this might be solved by a good dip. The coin is coated with crud and that may be what is making it look like a more worn coin. The $1200 price is too high for such an ugly coin IMO. That is Red Book price for the coin. All the Morgans I see on ebay are about 20% to 25% over priced for MS coins that are scarce. I would not buy it because to make it attractive you have to break it out of the slab. This is a coin you want to keep in the slab with the MS64 grade. You would have big argument over condition and value if it were raw I bet.
