Last month I bought myself a cheap metal detector "Model GC-1061" (my first) and I am very surprised how good it is.

Wednesday 3 August I found myself something very shiny and I smiled from ear to ear, but not anymore.

I'm stuck....First of all...I'm A nOOb when it comes to coins, medallions and tokens.

Now day 5 after my wannabe treasure surprise I am a little more wiser, but not much. I have no idea what this thing is....
I thought it was a coin, but now I have learned about medallions and tokens and my head is spinning after looking at thousands of pictures and endless google searches.

I need help from you guys, the professionals in identifying coins, medallions and tokens.....What have I found...?

Coin is 3 cm across - 0,2 (0,21) cm thick - and the weight is:

0,448 OZ
0,408 OZT
12,70 Grams

You found a touristic token. These are made to sell to tourists as a souvenir. This one is, as you can read, about 2 major touristic sites in Palermo: the Cappella Palatina and the Palazzo dei Normanni. Mostly these are struck in brass. When it sticks to a magnet, it is made in brass-plated steel.

Hei du fra Norge!

If this was found in this condiiton with a metal deterctor then I guess it hasn't been there for a long time, as it's in great condition.

This isn't a coin, but a medal: coins have a face value. It's most likely some tourist thing to commemorate a visit to the Cappella Palatina, which was the royal chapel of the Norman kings on Sicily and part of the royal palace there (palazzo dei normanni).

With those dimensions and that weight it's certainly not made of any precious metal.

Hope this helps!

When I set my metal detector discrimination on MAX, it react like crazy just as it does with my Canadian Silver maple leaf coins on MAX discrimination.

When I see this discrimination chart then the tourist medal has to be pure copper....or am I wrong....would not be the first time

As I said earlier, I believe this is a brass token. Brass is a metal alloy consisting of copper and zinc. The brass used for numismatic purposes contains a bit more tha 2/3 copper and a bit less than 1/3 zinc.
