I'm posting in this forum since it's a Canada piece. I will try and post images soon. Asyn was listing them as silver. I would like to find out before making an offer. The guy has 10. Asyn was getting $8-$10. Two years ago. Thanks.

Hopefully someone can tell me if it has silver and how much? Hopefully it stays in the Canada forum, as it's a Hinton AB token. Looking forward to your replies.

Hi Pocket Change. I'm guessing these are what is commonly referred to as " Trade dollars", although a $20 denomination is higher than the typical $1 of the past, when Trade dollars were far more common. The Town Office at Hinton should be able to tell you more about them but I think it's unlikely they're silver. How Trade dollars work is they're bought for a special event to raise funds, by a municipality or Chamber of Commerce, etc for as cheaply as possible, say $2 each just for example. Then local businesses hand them out in change, knowing that many people will keep them as souvenirs, similar to making a donation. After the expiry date, the organizers benefit by $18 per token.

If they're listed as silver, the question would be how much silver or the colour silver?

Some good clues to follow up on. I never thought of contacting the town, chamber of commerce. I suppose I could maybe ask Asyn, as he was listing them as silver. A neighbour is offering me 10. Asyn was getting $8-10 each. So I'm not sure what's a fair price. I like my neighbour, however, don't want to over pay either.

My question is why such a high denomination. I have lived in Hinton 12 yrs I never saw these except on ebay. I have seen other Hinton Trade dollars that are $1, so $20 is unusual.

My new neighbour is a coin collector. We were up til 1am going through pails of pennies. He has a ton of 2006 still almost mint and 2010s. I set those to go through. We basically sorted by decade, pulling dates aside to look further for varieties. This could be dangerous having a coin collector next door. He really likes pennies & silver dollars.
