Lately I have picking up some tokens, or are they medals,
when I see ones I like. These are National parks related,
and I like tokens that I might be able to relate to coins.

I try to pick these up cheap, but I am wondering what price
others are paying for similar tokens.

The next group of nine has - 1979 MACO - BRONZE
stamped into the rim. Inside the box cover -
Medallic Art Co. Danbury Ct.

Two others might have been made at a different time
Both are of Yellowstone and have Medallic Art Co NY.
Included in picture is the Old Faithful from first picture

I notice that you have the small yellow cardboard boxes that these came in. I started my collection of these in the 70's with the Mt Rainier and the Grand Canyon medals (these were near where I lived at the time, figure that one out if you can).

They are still being produced and are for sale at most national park gift stores for about ten dollars each. They now come in a plastic blister holder. If you do a search you will find the company web site with even more information about them. This is a series and the last time I checked there were about 65 medals available.

I love them! I have more than 20 of them and I try to pick up as many new ones that I can find when I visit a local national park. I have many of the same ones that you do. The best place I have found to purchase them is at Mt Rushmore, they have the full series on display in their gift shop. I think I will go there and pick some up, it is not very far away for me. Although I can go to Mt Rainer also, it is close by also (figure that one out if you can).

Thanks for the good information.

I gave $20 for 12 of them. I was worried I paid to much.

I do like them, they seem to be quality made.

The thought that some of them will go well with some of the
commemorative coins I have.

Nice start to a National Parks medal collection. All of the medals were originally struck by Medallic Art Company (MACO). The company changed locations over the years, but continued to strike a variety of high-relief medals for many customers.

MACO was purchased by Northwest Territorial Mint (NWT) back in 2009. NWT continues to make the Park medals available.

NWT is now in Chapter 11 bankruptcy proceedings, however, so it's not clear if these medals will continue to be available long term.

All of the pieces you've displayed are medals - none of them have any monetary value (i.e., they can't be used as money). Tokens are money substitutes with limitations on how they can be used as money for purchases. For example, a bus token might be good to purchase one bus fare, but not a loaf of bread or gallon of milk.

I've been picking a few up here and there as momentous of some of the parks I've been too. Since I'm a coin collector, it isn't hard to love these medals and collect them.
